By listening to your needs, requirements and current status we will work together to reduce your pain and resolve your musculoskeletal impairments and imbalances. Design an individualized specific and progressive therapeutic exercise plan of care based on educating you with the association of each exercise and restoring your postural awareness and muscle control, movement symmetry and achieving your specific short or long term goals.
Movement and postural dysfunctions of the cervical and lumbar spine are very common among the active and not so active lifestyles and typically present at first as a one-sided muscle weakness, a joint tightness, or episodes of "your back going out" throughout the year. A great percentage of these dysfunctions can be considered to be wake-up calls and can be resolved, but if gone un-diagnosed can lead to a sequel of events including: progression of spinal and extremity pain and daily/work functional limitations, decreased sport performance, undue damage to spinal supportive structures and neurological impingement symptoms resulting in cervical and lumbar spine radicular pain, extremity muscle weakness and increasing disability.
Dr. Barr's approach includes accurate movement assessment of each of your articulating spinal segment and the associated extremity complex, evaluation of myofascial tissue tension length, core muscle strength testing and postural movement deviation evaluation. Manual therapy techniques are performed to restore normal segmental mobility and tissue tension length symmetry. Your specific therapeutic spinal stabilization exercises are designed to increase core and extremity muscle control, awareness and strength with a progression of education and understanding of the association of each exercise with the correction and re-establishing your normal postural and movement control, thus eliminating the sequel to disability.
Since 1991 Dr. Barr has worked with athletes from multitudes of different sports and levels of competition and within sports medicine it is well understood that immediate and proper management of sport injuries either an acute/chronic tendonitis, sprain/strain , fracture or surgical intervention is mandatory. If your goal after an injury is to return athletic competition there must be a completion of each stage of recovery to build a solid foundation prior to advancing to the next. Intricate deficits in either mobility, flexibility or strength, even without experiencing pain symptoms, will limit normal progression and eventually present again, as an old or new pain site somewhere else.
Being able to reproduce the speed, stability, agility, power, endurance, accuracy etc., that is required for your full return starts with precise bi-lateral assessment to find and manual techniques to resolve these intricate weaknesses and tightness is a professional specialty of Dr. Barr. These altered movement patterns may have been adapted since the onset of injury/pain or were the original root causes of of your pain and performance limitations.
Return to running and throwing programs are a valuable component and are designed to gradually retrain and detail your musculoskeletal system for the demands that are required for a successful return.

Let me be very clear, I feel very fortunate to have found John Barr at Barr Physical Therapy. I have a long history of physical deterioration and physical therapy from others beginning in 2002, but those visits only provided temporary solutions for my symptoms. When John and I first met in August 2019 for an evaluation, I was hardly walking. He explained that some time ago, probably 20 years or more ago, I had fallen and and altered the movement of my pelvis and have been compensating since then. This made perfect sense. I had been a very active person all my life and have fallen a number of times in many different sporting activities. John Barr said I have a lumbopelvichip complex movement dysfunction and that this is can be reversible and that running again could be possible. In 6 short weeks I am not only walking normal without pain, I believe I will be able to resume many of the activities I had long ago given up. Yes I do believe I will be able to run again. So let me be your referral. If you have a disability you have been living with, or being told you have to learn to live with, get an opinion of John Barr right away.
